This is a brief outline of the requirements to achieve this promotion. A more detailed curriculum is available at our school.
Junshidoshi Ranks
Level I
Focus, Connect, and Correct
Level I Assistant Instructors should work to learn the following while developing as beginner instructors.
Demonstrate the ability to:
• Identify and correct students off task.
• Listen and follow instructor while watching students in class.
• Engage “lost” students individually.
• Use positive, encouraging statements.
Focus:
• Class and students as a whole.
• Dojo protocol.
• Communication with students using short sentences without disrupting instructor.
• Building bonds with each student.
Tasks:
• Line up class on time and properly.
• Prepare tatami for next class.
• Notice and correct student attire.
Level II
Learner Centered Teaching
Level II Assistant Instructors should work to learn the following while developing as novice instructors.
Demonstrate the ability to:
• Teach a small group (7-8 students) for 20 minutes
• Use Differentiated Instruction according to a student’s rank.
• Engage students as a group, keeping the group focused and motivated
• Drill techniques using traditional methods.
Focus:
• Improving skills and techniques already known to the student.
• Engaging a small group of students.
• Meeting each students learning needs.
• Strengthening the bond with each student.
Tasks:
• Memorize and use rank requirement breakdowns White to White-Blue.
• Record attendance.
• Memorize each student’s name.
• Prepare tatami for next class.
Level III
Student Management
Level III Assistant Instructors should work to learn the following while developing as intermediate level instructors.
Demonstrate the ability to:
• Teach a large group (10-17 students) for 30 minutes
• Use Differentiated Instruction according to the student’s learning style.
• Redirect students while teaching.
Focus:
• Reinforcing class expectations (i.e. raising hand before speaking, sitting correctly)
• Effective teaching positions (i.e. instructor placement, using mirrors to monitor class).
• Using: correct, warn, state, act – for moderate problematic disruptions
• Actively monitoring while teaching.
• Using positive directives to correct behavior.
Tasks:
• Assess what needs to be completed and complete it.
Level IV
Class Instruction
Level IV Assistant Instructors should work to learn the following while developing as full instructors. A Level IV Assistant Instructor is transitioning to Instructor and should develop leadership, class management and teach skills required to lead a entire class with little to no direction or supervision.
Demonstrate the ability to:
• Teach a class (22 students) for 60 minutes.
• Apply karate techniques and concepts outside of class (i.e. incorporating concepts and themes, 5 Traits, Qualities on windows, Outside thinking homework)
Focus:
• Overall class environment.
• Appropriate class management (i.e. use of assistants and helpers)
• Appropriate teaching terminology- by the numbers in English with Power in Japanese
• Appropriate voice inflection and tone.
• Development of leadership of fellow Assistant Instructors.
• Rapport development with students to the point of correcting behavior with non-verbal communication (ie: a look, silence, presence).
Tasks:
• Primary assistant to the Instructor.
• Ensure all tasks assigned to Level I- III Assistants are completed correctly.
• Direct and lead Level I- III Assistants.
• Ensure class is lined up on time and correctly.
• Ensure dojo protocols are enforced.
• Ensure students and Assistants gi are correct and neat.
